Large-Small Equivalence in String Theory

چکیده

The simplest toroidally compactified string theories exhibit a duality between small and large radii: compactification on a circle, for example, is invariant under R → 1/(2R). Compactification on more general Lorentzian lattices (e.g. toroidal compactification in the presence of background metric, antisymmetric tensor, and gauge fields) yields theories for which a large-small equivalence is not so simple. Here an equivalence is demonstrated between large and small geometries for all toroidal compactifications. By repeatedly transforming the momentum mode corresponding to the smallest winding dimension to another mode on the lattice, it is possible to increase the volume to exceed a finite lower bound.

On Open/Closed String Duality

It was recently shown, using the AdS/CFT correspondence, that the low energy effective action of a large N open string theory satisfies a holographic RG flow equation closely related to the Hamilton-Jacobi equation of 5-d supergravity. In this paper we re-obtain the same flow equation in the dual regime of small ’t Hooft coupling λ ≪ 1. Our derivation makes use of the conformal equivalence betw...

Non-Perturbative Planar Equivalence and the Absence of Closed String Tachyons

We consider ’orbifold’ and ’orientifold’ field theories from the dual closed string theory side. We argue that a necessary condition for planar equivalence to hold is the absence of a closed string tachyonic mode in the dual non-supersymmetric string. We analyze several gauge theories on R × S. In the specific case of U(N) theories with symmetric/anti-symmetric fermions (’orientifold field theo...

DEVELOPMENT IN STRING THEORY

The string theory is a fast moving subject, both physics wise and in the respect of mathematics. In order to keep up with the discipline it is important to move with new ideas which are being stressed. Here I wish to give extracts from new papers of ideas which I have recently found interesting. There are six papers which are involved: I ."Strings formulated directly in 4 dimensions " A. N...

Non-perturbative equivalences among large Nc gauge theories with adjoint and bifundamental matter fields

We prove an equivalence, in the large Nc limit, between certain U(Nc) gauge theories containing adjoint representation matter fields and their orbifold projections. Lattice regularization is used to provide a non-perturbative definition of these theories; our proof applies in the strong coupling, large mass phase of the theories. Equivalence is demonstrated by constructing and comparing the loo...

Why there is something so close to nothing : towards a fundamental theory of the cosmological constant

The cosmological constant problem is turned around to argue for a new foundational physics postulate underlying a consistent quantum theory of gravity and matter, such as string theory. This postulate is a quantum equivalence principle which demands a consistent gauging of the geometric structure of canonical quantum theory. We argue that string theory can be formulated to accommodate such a pr...
